How Stress & Emotions Trigger Breakouts
Dullness, Acne, flare-ups—Cindy Tusa explains what’s really going on beneath the surface.

It’s about the skin… but it’s not about the skin. What you see on the surface is usually coming from within.
~ Cindy Tusa
👋 Hey Advisor family,
Have you ever noticed how your skin seems to “act up” right before something big—an exam, a date, a hard conversation, a stressful week? Breakouts. Puffiness. Dullness. Flare-ups.
In this episode, I’m joined by Cindy Tusa, founder of White Magnolia Skin Institute, and she drops a truth that reframes everything:
It’s about the skin… but it’s not about the skin.
Cindy is a former neonatal ICU educator turned aesthetics leader, and her approach is refreshing: no fluff, no filters—just the real root. We discuss how your subconscious mind can trigger stress responses in your body instantly, and yes, your skin reflects that in real-time.
💡 The big idea
Your skin isn’t “betraying” you. It’s communicating with you.
Instead of staring in the mirror thinking, “What’s wrong with me?” Cindy invites a better question:
“What are you telling me today?”
Because when you treat your skin like a messenger—not an enemy—you stop chasing quick fixes… and start creating real, lasting change.

🫶 Cindy’s core truth
So many of us are taught:
👉 “Fix it with a product.”
👉 “Cover it with makeup.”
👉 “Treat it with a pill.”
And Cindy’s like… that’s not healing. That’s symptom management.
Real healing looks more like:
balance over burnout
self-awareness over self-criticism
listening over forcing
And this one line? It stayed with me:
“When we’re calm on the inside, our skin looks calm.”
⏱ A mindset shift you can try today (60 seconds)
Next time you catch yourself spiraling in the mirror, try this:
1) Pause and breathe (one slow inhale, one slow exhale).
2) Ask: “What’s out of balance right now?”
3) Choose ONE micro-shift:
Drink a glass of water
Step outside for a 5-minute walk
Get to bed 30 minutes earlier
Reduce one “toxic input” (doomscrolling counts)
Swap one sugary drink for something simpler
Cindy makes it clear: momentum starts small. One shift leads to another. And then suddenly… people start asking about your glow.
💪 Why is the confidence factor so powerful?
Cindy defines real radiant beauty in a way I love:
Radiance is when someone is fully in their being—
“I know who I am… and I like who I am. I love who I am.”
And here’s the wild part:
When someone carries that energy, it doesn’t matter if their skin is “perfect.” Their presence becomes the beauty.
That’s the kind of glow we’re talking about.
